Hargeisa (PP News Desk) — A week after Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi illegally signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Abiy Ahmed to lease a Somali coastal district to Ethiopia for fifty years, an MP from Awdal has today described the MoU as a treason. Mohamed Maydhane, an MP from Awadal, spoke to the media in Hargeisa to express dismay at the decision to lease Lughaya to Ethiopia.
“Long ago Ethiopia made its intentions clear to acquire access to sea by force or by peaceful means. No one can lease our coastal districts to Ethiopia, a country that has for a long time aspired to capture Somali territories. The Memorandum of Understanding signed with Ethiopia is null and void. Who signed it on our behalf had committed a treason” said Maydhane.
Ethiopia has since the signing of the illegal MoU issued statements to the effect that it would carry out an in-depth study on recognising Somaliland once the MoU is officially converted to a formal agreement to lease a Northern Somalia coastal district to Ethiopia.
On Friday, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia Dr Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said that “Muse Bihi, [Somaliland President], cannot lease a Somali coastal district to Ethiopia. The International Community has unreservedly expressed an unambiguous support for the territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
