The Ruling Puntland Political Association Postpones Pilot Local Elections

Garowe (PP News Desk) — Ahmed Daad Jama, a senior member of Kaah, the ruling political association of Puntland, told supporters in Qardho that pilot local elections planned to take place in October 2021 had been shelved.

“Puntland is busy with the federal electoral cycle. It is difficult to run two elections simultaneously. Therefore, the local pilot elections have been postponed indefinitely” said Daad.

Daad: “Pilot local government elections have been postponed indefinitely.”

Puntland Non-state Actors’ Association has urged Puntland political associations not to support any initiative to postpone pilot local elections.

“Postponement of local elections is consequential. Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission has the mandate to publicise any electoral postponement based on the consensus of registered political associations in Puntland” said a political journalist in Garowe.

Nine political associations have rejected what they view as a unilateral decision by Kaah, a political association headed by Puntland State President Said Abdullahi Deni.

Neither TPEC nor Puntland State Government has commented on Mr Daad’s statement.
