Human Rights Activist Urges Somaliland Government to be Tough With “Al-shabaab Sympathizers”

Guled Jama: “The government needs to be proactive and vigilant to tackle homegrown extremism before it evolves into something unstoppable.”

Hargeisa (PP News Desk) — Guled Jama, the former Director of the Hargeisa-based Human Rights Center, called on Somaliland government to take tougher measures against “Al-shabaab sympathizers.

“It seems Al Shabaab sympathizers in Somaliland are emboldened these days. The government needs to be proactive and vigilant to tackle homegrown extremism before it evolves into something unstoppable” tweeted Guled.

A major conference for religious educators is currently taking place in Hargeisa. Two days ago Somaliland authorities arrested Abdulmalik Oldon, a journalist, for criticising Mrs Joy Isa, the President of Barwaaqo University, for missionary activities alluded to in a now-deleted tweet of the Lagos-based the Elevation Church to which she belongs as a pastor.

The Elevation Church had since apologised for the tweet that, according to a journalist in Hargeisa, makes Joy’s position untenable.
