A Convicted Murderer Escapes Puntland Jail

Garowe (PP News Desk) — A man who was sentenced to death by a Sharia court in Puntland for the murder of a man in Lasanod several years ago had escaped Qardho jail.

Ahmed Abdi Jama reportedly fell ill and had to be taken to the hospital by Custodial Corps soldiers. On the way to the hospital several men ambushed the vehicle carrying the prisoner and spritted off the convicted murderer before reaching the hospital.

Spokesman for Puntland Custodial Corps Abdirisaq Hersi told the media that “the soldiers failed to take extra care while transporting the prisoner to the hospital”. One of the Custodial Corps officers tasked with taking the prisoner to the hospital is missing, the Spokesman said, sparking speculations that senior Puntland government officials are complicit in prisoner’s escape.

Abdirisaq Mohamud Hersi: “Soldiers did not take extra care while transporting the ‘ailing’ prisoner to the hospital in Qardho.”

Jama fled to Mogadishu after murdering a young man in Lasanod several years ago. The victim’s relatives in Mogadishu had reported the suspect to Banadir Police in Mogadishu where had been taken into custody and subsequently transferred to Puntland State. A Puntland Sharia court has sentenced Jama to death for murder.

Relatives of the victim alleged that Puntland Vice President Ahmed Elmi Osman had facilitated the escape of the convicted murderer from jail. They called for Puntland Government to bring to book people who helped Jama escape from the jail.
