Somaliland Opposition Leader Calls for Ceasefire in Ethiopia

Hargeisa (PP News Desk) — The Chairman of the Somaliland opposition party, UCID, Faisal Ali Warabe, called on the Ethiopian Government and Tigray People’s Liberation Front to agree an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

“We add our voice to calls for de-escalation of the conflict in Ethiopia. As it appears the conflict may acquire international dimensions and can affect all countries in the Horn of Africa” said Warabe, who held a press conference at the party headquarters in Hargeisa.

Faisal A. Warabe: Winning a Nobel Peace Prize and declaring a war on citizens are incompatible.

“Our message to the Ethiopian Prime Minister [Abiy Ahmed] is: winning a Nobel Peace Prize and declaring a war on citizens are incompatible. We believe that the war must stop and talks should begin in line with calls for de-escalation” Mr Warabe said.

Last week, the Ethiopian Government declared a war against Tigray despite framing the conflict as “operations in Tigray to bring TPLF leaders to justice”. The Ethiopian Government appointed an interim administration for Tigray against the wishes of Tigrayans, who held elections in September. TPLF won elections to represent Tigray.

Mr Faisal A. Warabe is the first Somali politician to call for cessation of hostilities between TPLF and Ethiopian Government forces and its allied Amhara militias.
