Al-shabaab Launches a Surprise Attack on a Mudug Village

Garowe (PP News Desk) — Details are emerging about a surprise attack launched by Al-shabaab on Shabeeley, a village under the jurisdiction of Southern Bacaadweyn in Mudug early in the morning. Firefight between locals and Al-shabaab fighters reportedly ensued.

The Bacaadweyn district commissioner Ahmed Dahir Mo’allim affiliated with Galmudug State, who briefed the media said that Al-shabaab fighters kidnapped several people including an influential Sheikh from Shabeeley. Casualties on both sides have not been confirmed.

Preliminary reports indicate four Al-shabaab fighters were killed by locals defending the village against the attack. The attack on Shabeeley reflects a change of tactics on the part of Al-shabaab to make its presence felt in villages far from well populated towns and districts in Mudug.

Galmudug security forces in conjunction with contingents of the Somali Army conducted security operations in South Galka’yo nearly two months ago.

Security experts in Mudug fear resource and planning constraints affect how Galmudug State can cope with intelligence-driven Al-shabaab operations.
