Somali Family Builds Memorial for Traditional Leader Killed in US Drone Strike Near Badhan

To honour his memory, the family of Omar Abdullahi Abdi has built a memorial at the site where the traditional leader was killed in a US drone strike near Badhan.

Boosaaso (PP News Desk) — The family of Omar Abdullahi Abdi, who was killed in a US drone strike on 13 September 2025 near Badhan, has built a memorial at the site where the traditional leader’s car was targeted on his way to the district.

“We have built this memorial so that the unjust killing of Omar will not be forgotten,” said a brother of the slain traditional leader.

In a press release, AFRICOM said  that the Federal Government of Somalia and American  “assets” assisted in the operation that killed Omar, whom the Americans had, without evidence, accused of purchasing weapons for Al-Shabaab.

Mursal Mohamud Abdi: “Puntland government told us that Omar was not involved in any criminal activity, and therefore we demand answers from those responsible for his killing.”

A delegation of Puntland MPs recently visited Badhan, where they met the family of the late traditional leader. “Puntland government told us that Omar was not involved in any criminal activity, and therefore we demand answers from those responsible for his killing,” said MP Mursal Mohamud Abdi.

Omar Abdullahi Abdi’s mother and sister have separately spoken to the media about their sorrow and the family’s right to seek justice for the killing of the traditional leader.
