Berbera (PP News Desk) — Labourers at Berbera Port have demonstrated against the management of the Port by DP World. “We have been instructed to get ID cards to be able to work as labourers and porters but our staff rota has been completely changed. Some officers at Berbera Port demand bribes from us in order to let us work. Sometimes we are beaten up by the Port staff. We are complaining about DP World” one Porter told SAAB TV.
“Last night, President Muse Bihi said that 70 percent of the young people are jobless. I ask the President: Is what is happening at Berbera Port job creation or job destruction?” said another porter. Porters and labourers allege that Berbera Port workers connected with the government are behind the unethical practices to exploit Berbera Port porters and labourers.
In 2021, Berbera Port Porters’ Association accused DP World of breaching a contract with porters. “The agreement with DP World to run Berbera Port did not involve usurping porters’ payroll management, which is the preserve of Porters’ Association” said a spokesman for Berbera Port Porters’ Association .
