Minnesota (Opinion) — The Feeding Our Future fraud case, which drew national attention to Minnesota and Somali immigrants living there, dates back to 2020. The founder of the organization, Aimee Bock, was found guilty on seven counts and may face up to twenty years in prison. Mohamed Ismail, the owner of Empire Cuisine and Market LLC, was sentenced to twelve years in prison for fraudulent claims and financial misconduct connected to the Feeding Our Future scheme.
Somali civic organizations, especially religious leaders, did commendable work in countering the vulnerability of young Somali men to extremism. That work should have been expanded to strengthening civic values, including the protection of shared resources such as government funds intended for vulnerable communities. Given the scale of the fraud and the length of time it took to surface, it is reasonable to assume that many Somalis were aware of what was happening.
Somalis I spoke with in Minnesota are asking why crimes committed by a small number of individuals are now being used by President Trump to demonize Somalis in Minnesota, and even Somalia.
Somali immigrants in the United States should remember that Trump’s behavior does not reflect the values of the American people, whose hard-earned tax dollars sustain welfare programs supporting millions of low-income Americans, as well as foreign aid sent to countries including Somalia.

Yesterday, I spoke with an African American lawyer who was my classmate. He told me that his nephew was stopped twice this week by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The officers, mistaking him for Somali, asked, “Were you born here?” His nephew now carries his passport everywhere. “He does not feel safe,” my friend told me.
Trump views the demonization of Somalis and other immigrants as political capital for the MAGA wing of the Republican Party after he leaves office. His stated target of one million deportations includes blocking planned legal entries such as family reunification visas for more than 120,000 people, and removing more than 800,000 undocumented immigrants and others with Temporary Protected Status. His broader political target is Representative Ilhan Omar. Elon Musk, has falsely claimed Ilhan Omar was elected mainly by Somali votes, even though Somalis constitute only about 3 percent of Minnesota’s population.
The United States is entering a troubling political era. The normalization of lies and the deliberate fomenting of hatred toward immigrants have become values that President Trump willingly promotes. The Feeding Our Future fraud case provided Trump and his MAGA supporters an opportunity to portray the country as endangered by immigrants. Somalis should not fall for these tactics. Trump will eventually discover the futility of his hate-driven rhetoric.
