Addis Abeba — Sheikh Ibrahim Tufa, president of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, visited the Embassy of Iran in Ethiopia in Addis Abeba to sign a condolence book and express solidarity with the government and people of Iran following recent attacks, the embassy said in a statement on its social media page.
According to the embassy, the visit came after what it described as a “brutal attack” by Israel and the United States, which it said resulted in the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
During the visit, Sheikh Ibrahim conveyed his condolences and affirmed his sympathy with the Iranian government and people, saying the loss was “not only for Iranians but for all Muslims around the world,” the embassy stated.
The embassy added that the council president honored the mission by signing the condolence book and expressing solidarity during his visit.
The development comes amid heightened regional tensions following recent exchanges involving Iran and several Gulf states.
Earlier this week, Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of Ethiopia, expressed solidarity with Qatar during a phone conversation with the country’s Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, according to a statement from the Amiri Diwan of Qatar.
During the call on 2 March, Abiy checked on the situation in Qatar following Iranian attacks that heightened tensions in the Gulf and conveyed Ethiopia’s support. He also expressed confidence in Qatar’s capacity to manage the repercussions of the attacks in a way that safeguards its security and stability.
In a separate diplomatic outreach reported by the Kuwait News Agency, the prime minister also held a telephone conversation with Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Crown Prince of Kuwait. During the call, Abiy condemned the Iranian attack as an “atrocious assault” that violated Kuwait’s sovereignty, airspace, international law, and the UN Charter.
The Kuwaiti Crown Prince later conveyed the greetings and appreciation of the Emir of Kuwait, Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, to Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie, thanking Ethiopia for what was described as its principled stance and expressing gratitude to Abiy for his “sincere and fraternal” initiative.
