Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, today called on the Government of the United Kingdom to “act decisively against spoilers” of his vision for one-person, one-vote elections in Somalia. President Mohamud was attending a birthday party in honour of King Charles III, held at the British Embassy in the Halane compound in Mogadishu.
The Somali President’s appeal to the UK comes in the wake of a rift between the Federal Government of Somalia and Jubaland State, where the process of presidential elections is being finalised.
“From now on, the neutrality of Britain in Somali politics can be called into question if the host country’s head of state can make a speech at the UK Embassy and ask for British interference in Somali politics. It is the president’s job to build consensus for his electoral vision,” said Adam, a political analyst in Mogadishu.
The President of Somalia is under fire for using the British King’s birthday party as an opportunity to convey the message that “Britain supports his political aspirations.” The British Embassy has not issued a statement regarding what many view as an incendiary comment by the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia at the British Embassy in Mogadishu.
