Abune Mathias of The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church “to send peace delegation to Northern Somalia”

Abune Mathias, the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, is reportedly alarmed by the conflict in Northern Somalia.

Addis Ababa (PP News Desk) — The office of Abune Mathias, the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, is reportedly looking into sending a delegation to North Somalia to end the one-month-old conflict in Sool region in the Federal Republic of Somalia. The initiative of the Abune follows in the footsteps of the Ethiopian government mediation efforts to end the secession war in Northern Somalia.

”The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church aims to urge Somali brothers and sisters to stop the bloodshed and resolve differences through negotiation” a retired priest told a radio station in Addis Ababa.

The two-pronged mediation efforts of Ethiopia comes in the wake of a claim made last week by the Foreign Minister of Somaliland Administration Essa Kayd, who told The Reporter, an Addis Ababa-based newspaper, that “Somaliland is a buffer zone for Ethiopia”. Ethiopia is sending troops to Somalia to reinforce ATMIS forces at with Al-shabaab in the South.

“The neutrality of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church will not endear it to the breakaway administration of Somaliland because Hargeisa views itself to be the seat of sovereign country” said a senior political analyst in Ethiopia.
