Garad Jama Garad Ismail Calls on Somaliland to Withdraw Its Forces

Garad Jama Garad Ismail: “Somaliland forces shelled houses and health centres in Laascaanood. It is a war Somaliland is waging against people of Laascaanood.”

Laascaanood (PP News Desk) — The continued indiscriminate shelling of Laascaanood by Somaliland forces prompted Garad Jama Garad Ismail, an influential traditional leader, to renew his call for the withdrawal of Somaliland forces in parts of Sool inhabited by the clan of the traditional leader.

“Somaliland forces shelled houses and health centres in Laascaanood. It is a war Somaliland is waging against people of Laascaanood. I call on Somaliland Administration to withdraw its troops to Oog. Withdrawal of troops is important to maintain peaceful and neighbourly co-existence of our people and our neighbours” said Garad Jama Garad Ismail.

The traditional leader praised Laascaanood district council for denouncing the indiscriminate shelling of the district by Somaliland forces that used artillery that killed more than 10 people in Laascaanood. “The Laascaanood district council acted wisely to speak up against atrocities committed by Somaliland forces that shell Laascaanood” added Garad Jama.

Yesterday, the United Nations Human Rights urged investigation into civilians killed by Somaliland forces two days ago during the press conference to publicise Laascaanood Declarations issued by traditional leaders in which they reaffirmed their representation by the Mogadishu-based federal institutions in politically and territorially United Somalia, and called for the withdrawal of Somaliland forces as a precondition for talks with the pro-secession Hargeysa-based administration.

Garad Jama Garad Ismail acknowledged the Somaliland traditional leaders in Hargeysa, who called for unconditional de-escalation of the conflict and respect for the democratic rights of the people in Laascaanood.
