Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — The news that Boris Johnson resigned was cheered by many Somalis in Mogadishu. “Good riddance! Boris is divisive and nurses imperial dreams. The British Parliament treated Somalia as possession” said a political activist in Mogadishu who took offence at a 2019 British Parliament report that used clan names to discuss Somalia politics.
Boris was sponsoring culture wars on UK to a point that he commissioned a group of ethnic minority notables such as Dr Tony Sewell to write a report that likened slaves’ suffering to resilience.
“Nabil Nadhawi, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, joined the culture wars by arguing that students should learn ‘about the benefits of the British Empire’. It is sad that ethnic minorities were drafted in to send this message which can land a Caucasian in trouble” said Ali, a British-Somali citizen who owns a security consultancy in Mogadishu.
Boris Johnson visited Somalia in 2017 as Foreign Secretary. “I hope a new British Prime Minister will be less disrespectful of our institutions. We demand the British Government to withdraw the 2019 British Parliament report that fuels clan hostilities in Mogadishu. British assistance to Somalia should not be compromised by poor diplomatic skills or interference in our politics” said M. M. Hirave, a journalist in Mogadishu.
