Las Anod (PP News Desk) — Unknown gunmen last night assassinated a Somaliland administration police officer and his wife in Las Anod. Assailants fled the scene. A senior police officer in Las Anod sent condolences to the family of the “slain soldier Mohamed Mohamud Musse and his wife”.
“The case is being investigated by the police. We have arrested suspects” the police officer told the media.
Last year, Somaliland authorities forcibly displaced Somalis from the South who lived in Las Anod following spate of assassinations targeting senior officials working with Somaliland administration. A trader in Las Anod told Puntland Post correspondent that the double murder in Las Anod “shows the futility of scapegoating hardworking citizens who were forcibly displaced several months ago”. The trader surmised that power struggles within Somaliland administration loyalists fuel assassinations in Las Anod.
“It is becoming increasingly risky for Somaliland administration soldiers to walk in Las Anod districts at night without going in groups on patrol. An out of duty soldier risks being assassinated at night. Civil servants and judges face similar risks” said the trader. The couple was laid to rest in Las Anod earlier in the afternoon.
