Former Puntland State President Urges PSF to Disarm

Garowe (PP News Desk) — The former President of Puntland State of Somalia Abdirahman Sheikh Mohamud Farole yesterday called on Puntland Security Force to disarm to bring to an end the stand-off in Boosaaso.

“PSF is a part of Puntland State organizations. It is not an independent force. PSF properties belong to the government in power, which has the powers to make appointments” Farole told BBC Somali Service.

Farole: “PSF should disarm to end the stand-off in Boosaaso.”

Farole has criticized traditional leaders who intervened and ruled that the outgoing PSF Commander owns properties and weapons of PSF. “The traditional leaders have escalated the situation” said Farole.

Yesterday, Farole co-signed a joint statement with former Somalia Prime Ministers Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke and Dr Abdiweli Mohamed Ali. He reportedly phoned BBC Somali Service to clarify his position on the Boosaaso conflict.

“No matter which external entity funds a national security force it is the government that has the responsibility to oversee it” added Farole, who denounced the sacked PSF Commander’s claim that the force is accountable only to the foreign funder.
