Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — The Prime Minister of Somalia Mohammed Hussein Roble today declared that his government was committed to elections based on the 17 September electoral model.
Roble met civil society members in Mogadishu following clashes between the government forces and clan militias in several neighbourhoods.
“I call on all Somali elections stakeholders to prepare for a national election and refrain [from] any action that would jeopardize this effort” reads a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister.
President of Somalia Mohammed Abdullahi Farmaajo will deliver a speech tonight on elections. Puntland and Jubaland welcomed the statement on elections. All federal member states are now committed to elections based on 17 September Agreement.
President Mohammed is expected to endorse the new electoral roadmap and sign an executive order that will effectively dissolve the bicameral legislature.
The breakthrough will see Somalia enter an indirect elections season to select MPs and Senators who will elect speakers of the bicameral house and the President.
