A Somaliland Poet Urges Support for Somalia’s “Legal” Maritime Territory

Hargeisa (PP News Desk) —  Yusuf Sha’ir, a prominent Somali poet and literary critic, has urged Somalis to support Somalia’s legal maritime territory against claims by Kenya.

Speaking to reporters in Hargeisa, Yusuf Sha’ir said that political differences among Somalis should never make “us blind to what we have in common.” “We must stand by Somalia in its right to protect its maritime territory” said.

Yusuf Sha’ir urged Somalis to support Somalia’s right to protect its maritime territory against claims by Kenya.

Last week, Khadar Hussein Abdi, the Secretary of Waddani, a Somaliland opposition party, told Somaliland youth groups in a Clubhouse session that the party opposed any attempts by a foreign country to claim Somalia’s maritime territory. “This is a common ground for all Somalis” Khadar said.

The hearing of maritime dispute between Kenya and Somalia began yesterday at the International Court of Justice in Hague. Kenya withdrew from the International Court of Justice case on a maritime border dispute with Somalia.  It has proposed that the matter be resolved by the African Union.
