English as a second Language (ESL) Facilitators for Continuous Teacher Professional Development

Introduction
The vision for the Educate Girls, End Poverty (EGEP-T) project is for marginalised girls, predominantly in urban areas of Somalia/Somaliland, to achieve improved knowledge and continuity of learning by mitigating obstacles at critical decision points and to transition through primary and secondary education, or alternative pathways. Ultimately, the girls will be supported to gain a better quality of life, with benefits for their family and community. EGEP-T will tailor support to the specific needs of the most marginalised groups, including internally displace people (IDPs), orphans, girls with disabilities, ethnic and clan minorities, and girls in high conflict-affected and remote areas, in both primary and secondary schools.
EGEP-T will work in partnership with Ministry of Education (MOEs) and Garowe Teacher Education College (GTEC) which is a teacher Education College established in 2005, located in Garowe, Puntland State of Somalia, with a mission to develop a sustainable pool of qualified teachers in Somalia through teacher education, training and research in order to improve the quality of education.
GTEC focuses on increasing the number of qualified (pre-service & In-service) teachers who are equipped with updated pedagogical skills; assisting Ministry of Education & Higher Education (MoE&HE) to establish sustainable and adequate pool of qualified teachers for primary and secondary in Somalia; developing viable and cost effective teacher training programs suitable for specific target group in Somalia; increasing number of qualified female teachers in primary and secondary schools in Puntland
Job Purpose
Each ESL facilitator will be responsible for the schools in his/her allocated area. ESL facilitators will be responsible for the provision of on-the-job support to selected English teachers in primary schools and English /Maths teachers in secondary schools. The support will include lesson observations, debriefing sessions to discuss strengths, gaps and identify action points to improve their teaching competencies. Training will be organised for the facilitators on the developed training package for English literacy and coaching.
Main Duties/Tasks and Responsibilities
- Work directly with teachers and support a culture of openness, learning and ambition
- Use reflective practices in providing Coaching and support to teachers
- Conduct monthly classroom observation visits and debriefing sessions for teachers
- Conduct joint reflective and support sessions with teachers in each school on monthly basis
- Provide regular feedback to the head teacher on the progress of support to teachers
- Participate in monthly hub and quarterly reflection meetings with coaches for CPD intervention deliberation
- Effectively use tablets for classroom observation support
- Develop and share work plans and reports for activities on monthly basis.
- Work with peers to develop good practice and shared learning that lead to improved learning outcomes for Somali children, in particular girls;
- Collaborate and work with stakeholders including Head teachers, Teachers, MOE and institution and EGEP-T implementing agency
- Adhere to implementing agency and institution child protection policies, procedures code of conduct and other supportive policies
- Any other assigned tasks as required
Position Requirement
Education qualification
- Bachelor degree in Education or diploma with a minimum of three years of teaching experience
Professional Knowledge and Experience
Knowledge and Experience:
- A minimum of 3 years’ teacher training experience, preferably in English
- Classroom teaching experience is highly desirable.
- Knowledge and experience of mentoring/ coaching is highly desirable
- Demonstrate good analytical and report writing skills
- Fluency in written and spoken English and Somali is mandatory
- Knowledge and experience of child-centred pedagogy and active teaching and learning is desirable
- Experience in working with community members especially children and education stakeholders
- Willingness to relocate and travel to area of work
