Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — The decision by the Federal Government of Somalia to bar holders of Taiwanese passports from entering Somalia has come into effect. Several years ago, Taiwan established an office in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland — a self-declared secessionist administration that claims to have unilaterally separated from Somalia in 1991.
Under the new policy, airlines flying to Somalia have been instructed not to allow Taiwanese passport holders to board planes bound for Somalia, citing Taiwan’s support for separatist movements within Somalia. Somalia subscribes to the One China Policy and regards Taiwan as an integral part of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

“By rejecting Taiwanese travel documents, Somalia’s government bows to China’s unreasonable demands and claims sovereignty over Somaliland,” misleadingly tweeted Senator Jim Risch, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He shared a link to a New York Times report on the new policy concerning Taiwanese passport holders attempting to travel to the Federal Republic of Somalia.
The United States of America recognises the political unity and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
