Boosaaso (PP News Desk) — Puntland Defence Forces in the Calmiskeed mountain range yesterday cleared hideouts that ISIS had used as ammunition and supply depots.
In Boosaaso, the public tipped off security forces about ISIS cells tasked with collecting extortion money from businesses. “Citizens are taking an active role in helping security forces combat ISIS cells in the towns. There is a telephone number to call to report terrorist activities. Our people have boosted the morale of the Puntland Defence Forces” said a senior security officer in Boosaaso.
It is becoming increasingly clear that ISIS was planning to turn Calmiskeed into a terrorism fiefdom, harbouring foreign outlaws and fugitives.
ISIS mined parts of Calmiskeed and nearby villages in what a security expert described as a desperate attempt to forestall the advance of Puntland troops. “There is a strong perception that ISIS terrorists from foreign countries outnumber Somalis who were brainwashed into joining the terrorist group” said the security expert.
Foreign terrorists poured into Puntland to take advantage of rival security apparatuses that resisted central control by the Puntland State government. The Puntland State government kept a lid on preparations for counterterrorism operations against ISIS to prevent the terrorist group from exploiting the fractious nature of rival intelligence services.
The Federal Government of Somalia congratulated Puntland State on its counterterrorism operations against ISIS. “Puntland forces will defeat ISIS” said the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
