Puntland To Deny Endorsing Gaza Refugee Relocation Plan

Puntland State President Said Abdullahi Deni was made aware of the quote spun by The Daily Telegraph to damage Somalia’s reputation.

Garowe (PP News Desk) – The Daily Telegraph, a London daily, interviewed an unsuspecting Puntland Information Vice Minister, Yacob Mohamed Abdalla, who told the newspaper that Puntland “would be happy to host Gazan refugees, as long as they come voluntarily.”

President Donald Trump suggested that Palestinians in Gaza could be relocated to safer places in Arab countries. Israeli officials proposed that Somalia — particularly Puntland and Somaliland — could host Palestinian refugees as part of a new plan by Israel to annex Gaza. This follows more than a year of bombardment of Gaza by Israel defence forces.

The Daily Telegraph story on the plan to forcibly displace Palestinians in Gaza.

The Puntland State Government did not authorise the Vice Minister to grant an interview to The Daily Telegraph. “It is not about welcoming Palestinian refugees to any part of Somalia, as Trump and Israeli politicians have proposed in different ways. It is about the forced displacement of Palestinians in Gaza, who have suffered famine, bombardment and detention,” said a senior Puntland State government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
