Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — Senator Abdi Qeybdiid has rejected the one-person, one-vote electoral model that the Federal Government of Somalia had proposed to be implemented in Somalia in 2026.
“Only consensus-based national elections will take place in Galmudug State. Galmudug State stakeholders will put their heads together” Senator Qeybdiid told a journalist.
He criticised President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s frequent foreign visits. “Visiting one country after another in such a short span of time is not the right way. I urge the bicameral legislature to pay attention to the wrong path Somalia has taken” he added.
Senator Qeybdiid, a former Commander of the Somali Police Force, is the first senator to speak out against the controversial electoral model. The Federal Government of Somalia claims it will implement the model in parts of the country, excluding Puntland State, the largest federal member state and the first autonomous administration founded in Somalia in 1998.
