Google Gemini and ChatGPT Identify An Oromo Sentence As Somali Language, But Perplexity AI Gets It Right

Perplexity AI beats Google Gemini, ChatGPT and Deepseek to correctly identify an Oromo language sentence.

Addis Ababa (PP News Desk) — In linguistics Somali and Oromo belong to the same Eastern Cushitic language group. Although no comparative study on the syntactic similarities between the two language has been conducted, Google Gemini and ChatGPT, two Large Languages Models platforms, identified an Oromo question as a somali language sentence. When asked the meaning of “ Eenyu Haa Hoggaanu?”, ChatGPT answered: “Eenyu Haa Hoggaanu?” is a phrase in Somali. It roughly translates to “Whom shall we lead?” or “Who should we govern?” in English. Google Gemini supplied a similar answer the same question: “ “Eenyu Haa hoggaanu?” is Somali. It roughly translates to “Who is leading us?” or “Who is our leader?”

Perplexity AI, a competitor of both ChatGPT and Google Gemini, provides the correct answer: “Eenyu Haa hoggaanu?” is in Oromo, a Cushitic language spoken in Ethiopia and parts of Kenya. It translates to “Who will lead us?” in English.” Deepseek, the new Chinese Large Language Model, gives the most outlandish answer to the question about the Oromo sentence. “Eenyu Haa hoggaanu?” is a phrase in the Tulu language, which is primarily spoken in the Indian state of Karnataka, particularly in the coastal regions like Dakshina Kannada and Udupi” answered Deepseek.
