Bosaaso (PP News Desk) — The East Africa University marine life veterinarians today visited Boosaaso beach to investigate the cause of hundreds of dolphins that washed ashore earlier this week. The vets collected samples of the dolphins’ blood and flesh to determine whether toxic dumping in the sea was responsible for the deaths of more than 200 dolphins.
Yesterday, the people of Boosaaso woke up to dolphins strewn across the beach, a sight that disrupted the Friday habit of many who swim in the sea before Friday prayers.
East Africa University will publicise the results of the investigations being carried out by its veterinarians. The institutional incapacity to investigate toxic dumping in the sea, coupled with illegal fishing, continues to pose a threat to marine ecosystems in Somali waters. The Bari Regional Administration has commended East Africa University for dedicating its time, resources and expertise to investigating risks to marine life, as exemplified by the large number of dolphins that washed ashore at Boosaaso beach.
