Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — Former President of Somalia, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, has urged businesses in Mogadishu not to purchase public lands currently being auctioned by the Federal Government of Somalia. “I warn businesses not to be deceived into buying government lands or accepting them as property given away by the incumbent government as a bribe. That will not constitute proper ownership of property,” Sharif Sheikh Ahmed tweeted.
The Federal Government of Somalia’s police force is enforcing eviction orders throughout Mogadishu to facilitate the sale of land to businesses. The land formerly occupied by Taleh Hotel was settled by individuals but was never legally transferred as private property. It remains the property of the State.
Somalia’s land laws prohibit the sale of government assets to private investors without thorough discussion and a transparent process.
During the 2017 presidential election, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed pledged that his administration would invalidate all government assets sold to private companies without transparency.
