Kismaayo (PP News Desk) — A ceremony to launch the amended Jubaland State Constitution was held in Kismaayo today.
“As a member of Jubaland civil society, I am glad to attend this event to launch the constitution, some of whose articles have been amended. People have shown unity of purpose to stand behind our leaders and have been aware of and objected to stratagems to destabilise Jubaland State,” said a female civic activist.
Holding the Constitution of Jubaland State aloft, an elder said: “This constitution is between Jubaland and the Federal Government of Somalia. We are a part and parcel of the Federal Republic of Somalia.”
The constitutional review process lasted eight months. “Every citizen has a right to have a copy of the Jubaland Constitution to know the rules and laws used by authorities to govern them,” a member of the public said at the event.
Last month, the Jubaland State Parliament elected Ahmed Mohamed Islam for a new term. The Federal Government of Somalia rejected the outcome of the election and deployed troops in Raaskaambooni in a failed attempt to overthrow the Jubaland Administration.
