Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — More than 70 members of Somalia’s bicameral legislature have strongly condemned the travel restrictions imposed by the Federal Government of Somalia on civilian flights to Jubaland State.
In a statement signed by 80 members of the Upper House and Lower House, the Federal Government’s Civil Aviation Authority was criticised for restricting passenger flights to Kismaayo.
The signatories denounced the executive order, calling it a politically motivated decision that violates the constitutional rights of Somali citizens to travel freely within their homeland. “Articles 61 and 69 of the provisional constitution oblige us to act in the national interest and oversee government institutions. These articles empower us to conduct performance reviews if federal institutions fall short of their duties. It has become commonplace for aviation authorities to impose arbitrary travel restrictions on citizens and prevent MPs from travelling” the statement noted.
The 80 MPs and Senators called on the Federal Ministry of Transport and Aviation to refrain from imposing travel restrictions for political purposes, stating: “Travel restrictions of this nature violate the rights of Somali citizens.”
