Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — The European Union is planning a political reconciliation conference in Somalia following the conflict in Raaskaambooni. The Swedish Ambassador to Somalia, Joachim Waern, told a Somali news website: “Now I think it is time to talk about some kind of peace conference. The EU is working on a reconciliation process [in Somalia],” said the ambassador.
There is a growing consensus that Somalia’s federal system faces critical challenges, which predispose the incumbent federal government to overreach and undermine Federal Member States that oppose it on controversial constitutional amendments and the impractical initiative of one-person, one-vote elections in 2026. These challenges exist within an atmosphere of pervasive political mistrust across the political spectrum.
“We have to constantly discuss with Jubaland, for example, and the Federal Government of Somalia, on how we can bring them together to some kind of reconciliation conference. I think the only way to solve these issues is to sit at the table and resolve them peacefully,” said the Swedish Ambassador to Somalia.
