Jubaland Conflict “Affecting” Kenya’s Tourism Industry

Raaskaambooni, a coastal area in Jubaland, is near Lamu and other tourist resorts in Kenya.

Kismaayo (PP News Desk) — The political conflict brewing in Jubaland State of Somalia is reportedly affecting tourism resorts in the coastal region of Kenya. The Federal Government of Somalia despatched troops to Raaskaambooni following the election of Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam. The Federal Government of Somalia denounced the election and accused the Jubaland President of reneging on joint declarations he signed as a member of the National Consultative Council.

Raaskaambooni, a coastal area in Jubaland, is near Lamu and other tourist resorts in Kenya. Unconfirmed reports indicate that ATMIS troops in Raaskaambooni have withdrawn from the area in response to possible confrontations between the Jubaland Forces and Somali troops airlifted from Mogadishu to Raaskaambooni.

The development comes in the wake of a renewed Al-Shabaab offensive in Middle Shabelle and Lower Shabelle.

Jubaland authorities gave the Somali government a two-week ultimatum to withdraw troops from Raaskaambooni. Travel agents and tour operators in Nairobi have begun advising tourists and visitors to Lamu about the uncertainty surrounding the potential conflict in the coastal areas of Jubaland State of Somalia.
