Garowe (PP News Desk) — The Vice President of Puntland State of Somalia, Ilyas Osman Lugatoor, today raised the alarm about the politicisation of the Somali National Army. Ilyas accused the Federal Government of using it “to destabilise peaceful federal member states.” Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 6th Puntland Climate Change and Environment Conference held in Garowe, Ilyas urged Somalia’s international partners to intervene and restrain the Federal Government.
“We are witnessing an unfavourable situation where the Federal Government of Somalia is using the national army to destabilise Jubaland State, a federal member state that conducted elections. The reckless actions of the Federal Government could lead to a second state collapse, far more traumatic and devastating than the one Somalis experienced in 1991. With terrorists now based in Somalia, any conflict risks being exploited by Al-shabaab. Somalia is politically fragile. We need to resolve political differences peacefully and through consensus” said Ilyas.
The Puntland Vice President reiterated the Puntland’s commitment to eradicating terrorists in the mountainous areas of Bari. “The government and the people of Puntland State of Somalia are united in this fight against terrorism, much like the way civilians repelled Al-Shabaab forces that launched surprise attacks on the coastal areas of Mudug and Nugaal in 2016” said the Vice President of Puntland State of Somalia.
