Hargeisa (PP News Desk) — The Secretary of the Waddani Party, Abdirashid Saleebaan, urged the outgoing Somaliland administration to rein in officials misappropriating public resources. In a press conference held at the party headquarters, Mr Saleebaan called for strict adherence to rules to prevent embezzlement and other forms of corruption during the transition period before the new administration takes over.
“It has come to our attention that certain officials of the outgoing government have kept state vehicles in their houses. Number plates of vehicles have been illegally altered. Other illegal measures include the employment of new staff and the unauthorised transfer of funds from government accounts,” said Mr Saleebaan.
The disclosure of the alleged irregularities comes to light one day after the President-elect of Somaliland, Abdirahman Abdullahi, met the outgoing President, Muse Bihi Abdi, who promised a smooth transfer of power to the new administration.
“I commend the officials who adhered to the rules to protect government assets,” said Mr Saleebaan.
The new administration plans to carry out an audit of government assets and civil servants to ensure it does not inherit a bloated bureaucracy. The outgoing Somaliland administration has not yet responded to the allegations made by the incoming administration.
