Muse Bihi Misinterprets “sea access” remarks of the Ethiopian Prime Minister

The unquotable Bihi: “As you know, this week Abiy Ahmed said that even if he does not sign the maritime Memorandum of Understanding with Somaliland, future Ethiopian generations will.”

Hargeisa (PP News Desk) — The President of Somaliland’s administration, Muse Bihi Abdi, yesterday claimed that the purpose of signing a maritime Memorandum of Understanding with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, in January was “to secure diplomatic recognition for Somaliland.”

While on the election trail in Hargeisa, Bihi gave a speech portraying the illegal maritime MoU as one of his administration’s achievements. He misquoted Abiy Ahmed and misinterpreted the Ethiopian Prime Minister’s remarks about seeking access to the sea. “As you know, this week Abiy Ahmed said that even if he does not sign the maritime Memorandum of Understanding with Somaliland, future Ethiopian generations will,” Bihi said.

Abiy Ahmed, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, claimed that Ethiopians of the present generation owe it to future generations to secure access to the sea.

Abiy claimed that Ethiopians of the present generation owe it to future generations to secure access to the sea. In response to this provocative statement, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia stated that Ethiopia should lose the privilege of hosting the African Union headquarters due to violations by Ethiopia against the territorial integrity of a member state. “Somalia has formed a defence pact with Egypt and Turkey to contain the expansionist regime of Ethiopia. The [British] colonial administration allowed Ethiopia to annex Somali territories, yet Ethiopia now seeks to annex territory belonging to [an independent] Somalia,” President Mohamud said earlier this week in a speech to the bicameral legislature in Mogadishu.
