Puntland Youth Mark International Peace Day with United Nations Support

On Saturday, 21 September 2024, in Garowe, Puntland Youth Association Network (PYAN) hosted an UNSOM-supported youth discussion on the role of youth in promoting peace. The event attracted more than 40 Puntland members representing youth associations in Puntland districts.

The discussion centered on enhancing the role of youth in participation and empowerment in peace initiatives in Puntland and throughout Somalia. It also talked about the difficulties young people encounter when participating in peace initiatives and conflict resolutions.

A panel of four members representing Puntland Youth, including young, inspiring politicians in the local councils, addressed the importance of youth’s engagement in using their power in a non-violent way during conflicts.

The discussion also focused on the creation of a culture of peace that starts at the grassroots, where youth will be part of education and outreach programs with the theme of the year.

In his opening remarks, Burhan Osman Hersi, the director of Puntland Youth Association Network, emphasized the crucial role of youth in peacebuilding and coexistence, urging them to enhance their education and steer their country towards prosperity.

After lengthy discussions among youth members, the panel and participants proposed the following points:
• Youth associations should promote open dialogues for peace and reconciliation among community representatives, with the aim of resolving misunderstandings within the community.

• Youth should be members of local civil society organizations and actively participate in peace processes.
• Youth should utilize their influence on social media for community development initiatives, justice, and integration.
