Former Somalia Federal Finance Minister Links Laascaanood Conflict to Economic Crisis in Hargeisa

Dr Beyle: “The civil war affected freedom of movement among people. Hargeisa was a booming capital city.”

Hargeisa (PP News Desk) — The former Somali Federal Finance Minister Dr Abdirahman Beyle told SAAB TV that the Laascaanood conflict has had a severe impact on the local economy. “I have been in Hargeisa for more than a year. The economic crisis is a fact. The civil war affected freedom of movement among people. Hargeisa was a booming capital city,” said Dr. Beyle.

He said that he was hopeful about economic recovery after the presidential elections. “Only the war causes an economic crisis of this magnitude. After the election, investor confidence will return,” added Beyle.

Ali Seenyo, the SAAB TV interviewer, shared anecdotal evidence with Beyle, who agreed with the interviewer. “An owner of a private hospital told me that before the Laascaanood conflict, the hospital doctors examined 77-80 outpatients every day, but now, almost a year after the conflict, the hospital doctors examine 22 outpatients,” said Ali Seenyo.

Dr Beyle owns Al Jabal Hotel in Jigjiga Yar neighbourhood in Hargeisa.

In February 2023, the Vice President of Somaliland Administration, Abdirahman Sayli’i, inaugurated Al Jabal Hotel, owned by Dr. Beyle, in the Jigjiga Yar neighbourhood in Hargeisa.
