The Togdheer Truckers Cooperative opposes mandatory insurance

The Togdheer Truckers Cooperative members challenge the insurance policies they are being urged to buy from newly formed insurance brokers in Burao.

Burao (PP News Desk) — The Togdheer Truckers Cooperative members issued a statement today regarding the mandatory insurance imposed on truck owners. The cooperative members met in Burao to challenge the insurance policies they are being urged to buy from newly formed insurance brokers.

“It is a plan to enrich a few people at our expense. We are already struggling with the payment of the semi-annual road tax. Many trucks are laid up in garages after owners were unable to pay the maintenance bills. The petrol stations demand cash upfront,” a member of the cooperative said to highlight the dire economic situation facing truck owners in Burao.

Another member of the Togdheer Truckers Cooperative contended that owners are still paying the annual three hundred thousand shillings to contribute to the construction of Erigavo Road despite the project being in limbo. “Every person is in his clan’s insurance’” said the man, referring to the practice of raising money from the blood-money sharing scheme used to pay victims of car or lorry accidents in Somalia.
