Laascaanood Conflict Affects Trade Ties With Togdheer

Laascaanood (PP News Desk) — Traders in Burao have decried the impact of Laascaanood conflict on trade ties with Sool. Business, the only social bridge that survived the prolonged conflict in Somalia to maintain inter-regional links, is now becoming less immune to after effects of a political conflict in Northern Somalia.

Traders in Burao interviewed by Somali Cable TV said that business during pre-Eid period this year “is not as brisk as it was last year”. One trader said that “there is drastic decline in market activity because traders from Laascaanood and and Buuhoodle used to come to Burao to buy goods. They no longer come to Burao. Burao is economically linked with Sool and Buuhoodle.” Another trader had called for an end the conflict affecting the business community.

Products made by small factories in Burao are sold throughout Puntland. The bulk of livestock exported at Berbera are sourced from Puntland and other southern regions. Peace ensured that Somaliland businesses benefit from the purchasing power of Sool and other major Puntland districts.
