Ethiopia “alarmed” by the territorial war in Northern Somalia

The Prime Minister Ethiopia Minister Abiy Ahmed is contemplating to mediate the two parties to the Laascaanood conflict in Northern Somalia.

Addis Ababa (PP News Desk) — The Ethiopian government is monitoring the situation in Northern Somalia where Somaliland administration is waging a territorial war based on colonial borders. The unrecognized breakaway region mobilized its forces to capture Laascaanood district federally represented by Puntland State of Somalia.

The President of Somaliland Administration Muse Bihi Abdi claimed that his forces will secure  the border that once separated the ex-British Somaliland and ex- Italian Somaliland. Ethiopia considers Somaliland to be a part of the Federal Republic of Somalia in line with the African Union Charter.

“Ethiopia is alarmed by the claim that Somaliland does not only recognize the sovereignty of Somalia but also interprets the colonial border in a manner that could rekindle hostilities based on colonial borders. Ethiopia annexed ex-British Somaliland territories that Britain was supposed to protect in line with the Protectorate Agreement it signed with Somali tribes. The Ethiopian government is considering mediating the two sides” said a political analyst in Addis Ababa.
