Somalia Expresses Solidarity With China over Taiwan

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and President Xi Jinping

Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — The Federal Government of Somalia today expressed solidarity with the People’s Republic of China over Taiwan tension. In a statement published in the Foreign Ministry website Somalia “reiterates its resolute support for China’s sovereignty, political independence, territorial integrity, national unity, and calls for adherence to relevant United National and African Union resolutions”.

The visit of Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, to Taiwan this week prompted China to conduct military drills near Taiwan. China opposes the policy that treats Taiwan as what Beijing views as proxy against China sovereignty.

Fifty one years ago China won the United Nations seat previously occupied by Taiwan. Somalia is one of the twenty-plus African countries personally thanked by Chairman Mao Zedong for supporting China’s bid for a seat at the United Nations. The historic decision recognised the government of the People’s Republic of China as the only legitimate representation of China to the United Nations. Somalia’s statement strengthens that historic milestone in post-World War 2 Order.
