Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — Somali civil society organizations in Mogadishu have taken issue with a tweet by the European Union ambassador to Somalia Tiina Intelmann. They accuse the ambassador of conflating terrorist attacks and politically motivated murders.
“Violence is not a way forward for #Somalia. #EU condemns terrorism and politically motivated killings. Condolences to the family of MP Amina Mohamed Abdi #Beledweyne @EU_in_Somalia” tweeted the EU ambassador to Somalia.
“It is absurd to bracket terrorist attack with any other form of attack when we know that it is Al-shabaab that targets MPs and other politicians that went on the record for speaking up against terrorism. EU Ambassador to Somalia committed a diplomatic faux pas. It is the height of arrogance to refuse to retract the tweet that is too insensitive to the family grieving for the slain MP” said Ali Mohamud, a member of Mogadishu civil society.
Al-shabaab, a terrorist organization claimed responsibility for killing Amina Mohamed Abdi, a former MP who was seeking re-election for a parliamentary seat in Beledweyne.
