A Leading Somali Melodist Passes Away in Mogadishu

Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — Jiim Sheekh Muumin, a melodist, guitarist and lute player, yesterday passed away in Mogadishu.

Born in 1940 in Buloburde district of Hiiraan, Jiim first made the melody of a patriotic song in 1964, a song written by the late Professor Ahmed Nur Yusuf, as Jiim told an interviewer eight years ago.

He was instrumental in forming Onkod, the artists troupe of the Somali Custodial Corps, and worked with Waaberi and Danan before 1991.

Jiim remained in Mogadishu most of the time since 1991. He played an important role in reconstituting Onkod in Mogadishu.

The Somali Munster for Information, Culture and Tourism Osman Dubbe sent a message of condolence to the family of Jiim Sheekh Muumin.

In 2020 Astaan TV honoured Jiim for his fifty plus years of contribution to the Somali arts.
