Las Anod (PP News Desk) — Nearly two weeks after Somaliland government used its militias in Las Anod to forcibly displace more than 1,500 citizens, Yasin Haji Mohamoud Hiir, an MP who represents Las Anod in the secessionist administration’s parliament, remains reluctant to denounce the policy that renders Somali citizens in a part of their country foreigners who can be forcibly displaced and whose properties can be looted.
Members of the South West State community in the United Kingdom have reportedly telephoned Hiir, a British citizen, but he had not taken the calls.
“Yasin is the first person we hold liable for the forced displacement of our people in Las Anod. As the MP of Las Anod in Somaliland Parliament he has a lot of explaining to do” said Adan Hussein, a lawyer in London. The Somaliland government describes victims of the forced displacement as foreigners who illegally settled in Las Anod.
“If Yasin does not stand by the position of Somaliland government why has he refused to denounce forced displacement? Why does he deny Somali citizens from the South West their right to live and work in Las Anod? Did not Yasin pledge not to get involved in any human rights violations when he applied for British citizenship?” Aden told Puntland Post over the phone.
“The humanitarian community deeply regrets the arrest and subsequent forced displacements of more than 1,000 women, children and men from Las Canood, Sool Region on 2 and 3 October” tweeted The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. “Forced displacement is a crime against humanity” added Adan.
