Former Somalia Foreign Ministry Director General Accuses Presidential Candidates of Treason

Former Prime Minister: Omar A. A. Sharmarke admitted that Norway drafted the MoU and that Kenya hoodwinked Somalia

Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — Dr Abdi Ulusso, the former Somalia Foreign Ministry Director General, claimed that he had been fired for submitting the Memorandum of Understanding signed with Kenya in 2009 to the Somali Transitional Federal Parliament.

Ulusso described the memo as a treason. “Sadly, though the same people who signed MOU, fired me and put Somalia’s sea waters in dispute want to come back. What, shame!” tweeted Ulusso.

Former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed distanced himself from the MoU

The International Court of Justice is to pass a judgment on the maritime dispute between Somalia and Kenya in October 2021.

In 2009 the former Somalia Minister of Planning and International Relations Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame signed the MoU on behalf of Somalia. The MoU accepted Kenya’s claim that “the delimitation of the continental shelf between the Republic of Kenya and the Somali Republic (hereinafter collectively referred to as “the two coastal States”) has not yet been settled. This unresolved delimitation issue between the two coastal States is to be considered as a “maritime dispute”.

Abdirahman Abdishakur said “the buck stops with the President and Prime Minister Omar A. A. Sharmarke.”

“The Court might deliver a judgement that emphasises an out of court settlement since Somalia has in the first place accepted Kenya’s argument that questions the maritime rights of Somalia. The man who signed MoU and his boss, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, are Presidential Candidates close to Kenya and its allies” said a Somali lawyer based in Mogadishu.
