The current crisis in Ethiopia entails political solution

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has followed in the footsteps of Derg regime.

One would be naive to think that the ongoing war in Ethiopia will “only” target TPLF and be a “short” one. The truth is that almost all of the people of Tigray see AbiyAhmedAli and his government as the incarnation of the DERG regime. The Tigray people have cast their ballot and elected the Tigrai Liberation Front(TPLF) as their representative. To this end, most Tigrians consider waging war agains TPLF at this time an attack on the people. This makes the ongoing war in north Ethipia a dangerous one.

The 2019 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Abiy Ahmed Ali has recently boosted the fighting morale of the Tigray people after he proved himself that he is indeed Derg2.0. Abiy aerially bombed Mekelle, a city of more than half a million people, and promised to throw more bombs in different cities of the region as if they are some sort of toys. He has already cutoff telephone, internet, electricity and other services to the region which shows his luck of empathy to civilian livelihood.

Let’s not delude ourselves by saying the war is “only” with TPLF and will be over in a “short” time. If nothing else, contribute your share by not promoting this aimless war before it is too late. What is at stake is not the lives of the politicians making this mess but that of innocent people. If this war is not stopped now, it has the potential of becoming the bloodiest, deadliest and most protracted war the HornOfAfrica has ever seen. No one is going to benefit from that.

The international community has to pressure Abiy Ahmed Ali to solve his political difference with TPLF (and other parties) through dialog, and not through war and bombing cities. He should learn to make compromises and accommodate others with different political ideologies for that is the only viable option. War cannot solve anything! Abiy won, the nobel peace prize in 2019, it is time that he lives to the expectation of millions of Ethiopians and the international community to deliver peace.
