Prime Minister Roble Writes to Federal Member States About Missed Deadlines

Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — The Prime Minister of Somalia Mohammed Hussein Roble wrote to Federal Member States about missed deadlines to appoint electoral commission members.

Roble urged Federal Member States to submit names of members for joint electoral commissions not later than October 20, 2020.

“The deadline for submitting members for state and national electoral commissions and the arbitration committee has been passed” Mr Roble wrote. The Prime Minister urged Federal Member States to submit appointed members of electoral commissions and eight members for the national committee tasked with electoral management “not later than 20th of October in line with agreed guidelines”.

The Somali Prime Minister’s correspondence with Federal Member States comes in the wake of renewed rift between the Federal Government of Somalia and Jubaland State over the deployment of troops in Gedo region.

The Somali Prime Minister’s correspondence hints at possible term extension for the bicameral legislature and the executive branch.

Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam rejected the deployment of contingents of the Somali Army following the indiscriminate bombing of some Gedo districts by the Kenyan troops part of AMISOM peacekeeping forces.

Disagreements over Hirshabelle electoral schedule include other complications that might lead to delayed national elections in Somalia. The agreement on the electoral model for Somalia seemed to have removed obstacles to timely elections.

The letter to the Federal Member States hints at possible term extension for the Somali federal executive and legislative branches if Federal Member States fail to honour their commitment to appointing joint electoral commissions.
