US Embassy in Mogadishu Labels Puntland and Jubaland Leaders “Spoilers”

Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — The US Embassy in Mogadishu has tweeted about the absence of Jubaland and Puntland leaders from Dhuusamareeb III Summit.

“@US2SOMALIA has worked for inclusion of all views at the table in #Dhusamareb3, but can’t help those absent. Spoilers withholding participation sacrifice democracy for own ambitions. Parties will need to move forward with timely model agreed” reads the tweet that raises the possibility of travel sanctions against President Said Abdullahi Deni and Ahmed Mohamed Islam of Puntland and Jubaland respectively.

Ambassador Donald Yamamoto (left) has chosen to label Puntland President Said A. Deni (middle) and Jubaland President Ahmed M. Islam (right) “spoilers” for boycotting Dhuusamareeb III Summit.

On the eve of Dhuusamareeb III Summit Puntland State Government published a position paper in which it had called for the International Community to play the role of guarantor in the Summit. Jubaland issued a vague statement calling for the the International Community to have a role in organising Dhuusamareeb III Summit.

At a UN Security Council session today James Swan, the Special Representative for the Secretary General, deplored “the absence of Puntland President Said Deni and Jubaland President Ahmed Islam Madobe from this important meeting [ — Dhuusamareeb III Summit].”

The strongly worded tweet from the US Embassy in Mogadishu may weaken the position of the embattled Jubaland President whom the Federal Government of Somalia recognised as a legitimate President with a lesser term time in office than he claims on the back of 2019 parallel controversial Jubaland elections held in the city of Kismayo.
