Galka’yo (PP News Desk) — The Commander of Puntland Presidency Guards Osman Omar Mohamed died of wounds sustained during a clash between Puntland Security forces and militias over former Army Workshop Barracks.
The administration of the former Puntland President Abdiweli Mohamed Ali sold the barracks to a local businessman.
Puntland Government has issued a statement and described the clash as an operation against “drug traffickers”. Reports from Galka’yo indicate that the militias object to the decision to sell public assets to a businessman. Exchange of heavy gunfire is being heard throughout Galka’yo.
Puntland President Said A. Deni is his last leg of a visit to Mudug. How the slain commander was targeted is not clear. Unsubstantiated reports point to an attempt on the part of the Commander to negotiate a peaceful solution to the dispute over the ‘questionable’ sale of public assets to local businessman when the fight unexpectedly erupted and cost his life along with several soldiers.
