Qardho (PP News Desk) — Karkaar regional police deputy commander Jama Osman Dhala’ has apologised to the public about video clips of girls socialising by bonfire. Karkaar police officers rounded up last night a group of girls and man whom the police officers accused of “worshiping fire”.
“We unreservedly apologise for the images shared on the social media. The aim was not to humiliate youngesters. Our aim was to record images as evidence to share with youngsters’ parents about religiously impermissible actions” said Karkaar regional police deputy commander in a statement. “Some people with mobile phones used their phones last night to record our operation and shared it on social media platforms” said Dhala’. Dhala’ has not clarified if “people” who leaked video clips are police officers or not.

The leaked video clips bring to light the unprofessional approach used by police officers while detaining youngsters. One officer urged other police officers to beat up the only young man with the group of girls.
Dhala’ said Qardho police station had been investigating reports about immoral gatherings by youngsters when police officers had located where the group was socialising and lit a fire to keep warm and improve visibility during nighttime at an expanse on the outskirts of Qardho.
A local civil servant had called for Puntland State government to train Puntland police on privacy and keeping personal data.
“Police officers acted unprofessionally. They will use their power to intimidate or blackmail the public if recruits are not properly vetted” said the civil servant who has asked for anonymity.
