UCID leader deplores poor leadership in Somaliland

Hargeysa ( PP News Desk) — The Chairman of the second opposition party in Somaliland (UCID) Mr Faisal Ali Warabe yesterday held a press conference in Hargeysa. “Somaliland is at a dangerous crossroads. It has become the norm to exploit clans under the pretext of forming an economic committee to wage a war. This situation reflects the extent to which Somaliland government organisations have become ineffectual” Faysal said.

Chairman Faisal: Somaliland government organisations are ineffectual

UCID leader said that no cabinet member “maintains close links with his/her constituency”. Faisal’s comments come in the wake of renewed hostilities in Sanaag and violent dissent in Awdal.  “Some people in our midst are working to undermine Somaliland” the UCID Chairman said.  UCID is one of the three Somaliland parties that participated in the first one person, one vote elections in Somaliland in 2003. UCID garnered 4% of votes cast during 2017 Somaliland presidential elections, less than 10% of the votes the party gained during 2010 presidential elections.

UCID has lost a massive chunk  of  national votes. This trend might be repeated during the planned parliamentary elections in Somaliland if President Muse Bihi Abdi shelves his government’s plan to allow for the establishment of political associations that will contest for a party status. Somaliland Constitution stipulates three parties.
